Mid-Session Wheat Market Report for 10/7/2008

December wheat opened 12 3/4 cents higher on the day at 608 and established an early range of 600 to 616. Today's higher open followed similar action in the overnight session. A brief selloff into early mid session met with good support from local traders as well as funds according to floor sources, however traders said that volume was light to moderate after yesterday's heavier volume selloff. Wheat gained substantially on corn to start the day after losing ground to corn yesterday. Egypt bought 110,000 tonnes of wheat from the US and Russia according to GASC, that country's main official wheat buying agency. This follows three straight wheat purchases in which Egypt bought nothing from the US. In addition, millers in South Korea bought 25,300 tonnes of US wheat. Ukraine announced that it exported 3.1 million tonnes of wheat from July 1, 2008 through September 30th. This compares to just 900,000 tonnes for all of the 2007/08 marketing year, which highlights the sharply increased availability of Black Sea origin wheat this year. Today is expected to be the last day of a potential frost threat in Argentina, with weather expected to warm up tomorrow. Recent rains have benefited the wheat crop there on a scattered and partial basis according to local sources, but conditions overall are still mostly fair to poor. The Australian wheat crop is also thought to be in danger of further deterioration due to ongoing dryness. Recent rains having provided only partial relief, and some wheat areas there are facing a frost threat this week.
